As entrepreneurs or creative types we tend to be all over the place. We have 100s of ideas running through our brain at all times and yet there are days I think to myself, what did I even do today?
I finally found something to help keep my scattered mom brain in check. Enter Hatch Notebook. Literally it’s my brain in a beautifully, simplistic notebook. Not to mention there is rose gold on the front. #soldatrosegold
I’ve had this book for a couple weeks and figured my solo flight to Denver would be an amazing time to start using it. No wifi, no hungry kids needing their 15th snack of the morning, no laundry needing done. Just my notebook and my mind.
I don’t know if you are like me in the fact that the majority of your friends and family have no idea what you do. So when you bring them these grand ideas to help you talk through, they look at you like you have three heads. Then doubt sets in. Well then this book is basically the power partner or coach you always wanted but couldn’t afford. Without saying a single word Hatch will help you walk from the beginning stages to the end. Not to mention its so fun, to have a record of these hair brain ideas.
Easy to Understand Directions
There are three sections to this book
- CONCEIVE: Generate and organize ideas into an unorthodox table of contents—your List of Ideas
- INCUBATE: Evaluate your ideas for feasibility and personal excitement level
- HATCH: Develop an idea into a fully formed concept, plan action steps, and execute
And it asks the questions you aren’t even sure to ask yourself allowing you to move these ideas along to fruition. Its genius, really.
Fun Facts About Writing Down Your Goals
- Statistics show people who write down their goals have over an 80% higher success rate of achieving them.
- Not writing down your goals is like going on a road trip without a destination or road map. It might be a fun trip but you will never get where you want to go.
- It helps keep you accountable.
- It will keep you motivated to keep moving in the right direction. A lot of times it seems so daunting, we stall completely.
- It will help you celebrate those big achievements knowing what they started as.
So what are you waiting for? Grab your own Hatch Notebook and get to jotting. Id love to hear how much you love it and how it helps. Or share below how you keep your scattered brain in one place.
So if you aren’t aware, last week IG made it available for profiles to be categorized as either a personal (what it has always been) or you could make the change over to business account. The internet is going batty over the fact that Instagram is going to limit your visibility as a business so a lot of people aren’t buying into the switch. Remember FB and IG are siblings and FB makes business pages ability to organically reach its tribe very difficult.
Well as soon as my update to business button was there I jumped with two feet ready to see what everyone was talking about. I made the switch on July 19th. Prior to making the switch my previous 25 posts averaged 182 likes each. Since making the switch, the 8 posts I have posted at the same time and using same hashtag strategy my previous posts average 112 likes. Hmmm. Now in Instagram’s defense they have had some bugs since the switch. Hashtags weren’t working for 2-3 days, top posts weren’t updating, and then it appeared as IG said on Twitter “a small amount” of users apps have a bug and you need to delete and reinstall. They are obviously having some growing pains so before I make a permanent decision as to what direction I am going to go, i’ll give it more time and enjoy the analytics that come with it. I’m such a numbers nerd so I am loving every bit of the data that comes with this.
Before the switch I would head on over to Iconosquare Pro to check out my numbers and help develop my strategy. It gave me decent information and appeared to be accurate, but coming from a third party you never know and truthfully I want to know who my audience is, not just when they are active.
Heres a peak at what you get with a business profile:
Impressions: the total number of times all of your posts have been seen.
Reach:The number of unique accounts that have seen any of your posts.
So while my likes and comments have gone down since switching over to a business account it is obvious it is still getting out in front of people. (see individual picture below)
One of the main differences in analytics between 3rd party and IG is I’m able to tell WHO my audience is. I knew I was heavy on the women side but I would have never thought they were so close in proximity to me. Since the majority of my business is done online and we operate in US and Canada (soon to be AUS) I’m not focused on local as much as a brick and mortar business should be. But I love Nashville and Nashville apparently loves me!In addition to general analytics of account you can even dive deeper into each individual post. Here is a picture a couple days old. Majority of comments come within the first 6 hours so this picture won’t get much more action. I had around 4300 followers at the time of this picture.
So only a week and and plenty of time to jump ship, what are you going to do?
This country was built on the idea of entrepreneurship and yet growing up in the 80’s and 90’s (stop doing the math) I don’t ever remember being told by my parents, teachers, or coaches that entrepreneurship was a solid career choice for a woman. I was told to go to college, get a job, and work my way up the corporate ladder for 50 years then retire. So obviously that was the path I took obediently.
I was on track until my first daughter was born. I worked in a male dominated industry and upon the announcement of my pregnancy the bets against me returning to work began. I don’t lose, it’s just not in my nature so naturally I came back to work as soon as my maternity leave ended and began climbing that ladder again, just this time things were different. The day my daughter was born a new person in side of me was born. Dreams and aspirations came alive that I honestly had no idea where even buried inside me. I no longer wanted to work those 10 hour days with a 2+ hour commute to then only see my newborn for an hour before bed. There had to be another way. I stayed on course drawn out for me for 18 months after she was born. Plugging away. It wasn’t until I found out I was pregnant with my second baby girl that I finally had to courage to walk away from the “safe” life we had created.
Enter SAHMing. Wow. Little different than what I was expecting. Once I managed to get a grip on this new gig with 2, I began searching for something that would help me provide for my family and keep my mind active while keeping me home. And Modern Day Moguls was born. It has provided my part time hours, with full time pay potential. I work from home at nap time and around their schedules. More important than all of that though, it give me an identity and purpose away from being a mom while feeding my creative soul. Sounds like a dream job, doesn’t it? Once I started to change my mindset about what work actually looks like I was able to soar and dream so much bigger. I don’t have to sit in a cubicle or be a road warrior to be successful.
I am all about the online businesses right now. They provide freedom and flexibility and while everyone is out there moaning about screen time being bad for kids I want to embrace our technologies and teach my girls how to make it work for us. I’d like you to introduce you to OUR newest baby, Our Hamper . While they are only 2 and 4 and I will most likely be taking the lead of this for awhile I know it takes time to build businesses and I want this to be something they can eventually take the lead on. So we are starting here and they will help when they can. Then we are going to take money earned and reinvest it in things they need. (Don’t worry, we are still donating a ton of stuff and giving to our friends and family)
Here are the girls dropping off their first sales!
So we plan on skipping the lemonade sales and planning on taking the e-commerce world by storm. Hope you join along for the ride.
We all know having an active social media presence is important for business but sometimes trying to figure out where to start is hard. I’m a one woman show with the occasional help of a VA so I can’t be everywhere at once nor do I feel like I need/want to be. I created my Instagram account in Oct of 2015 so I’m a newbie on this account at 9 months old. It’s been slow and steady but whats more important than anything else is its authentic and real. My engagement rates are over 2x the industry standard and I love that. What’s even more impressive than that is that it is the leading force of website traffic for me.
Being a one woman show I need people to work for me and as shown above IG is my best employee to date and I’d also like to note that this is after the dreaded algorithm has taken place. It is rocking and rolling sending people to my site to introduce them to my amazing products and the business that allows me to live out my dreams while being home with my babes.
So here are a couple tips to make IG start working for you.
- Spruce up your photography skills. There are so many online tutorials to make sure you are taking the best photos your phone/camera allows (95% of my photos were taken from my Samsung Note 4. I recently upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy S7 and can already tell a difference in my quality)
- Download VSCO and figure out a recipe for your edits. You want cohesion. Need ideas? Check out my Pinterest board for what I mean. Aesthetics wins every time on IG, make it appealing.
- Need a call to action. I am always sending people to my website for either a giveaway, new blog post etc. Give people a reason to click the link in bio. This link is good until the 10th. Go enter!!!!
So I’d love to hear how you are going to turn IG into another employee. Leave a comment below.
