As the outside temperates go down, our time spent hanging indoors goes up. I’m not going to lie, I love these cooler temps so much for this reason alone. Here in Nashville we all know that the temps will drop over night, and you will be closing windows and cuddled up inside before you know it. So let’s get prepared before its too late!
This fall home repairs post is sponsored by Hoffmann Brother. Thank you for supporting the brands that support this blog!
Hoffmann Brothers has several things they offer to make sure your home is ready for all this extra hanging out inside time. And since air quality is hard to show photos of, I’m going to share all my minimalistic halloween decor.
Fall Home Repairs Checklist:
Indoor Air Scrubbers
Pre 2020 would you have ever considered an air scrubber? Do you even know what an air scrubber is? While you probably think staying inside can help you avoid allergens and pollution, you may be surprised to find that the air you breathe can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than the air outside, according to the EPA. A UV air scrubber attracts the tiny particles of pollutants, allergens, and gases with negative ions created by ultraviolet rays. The tiny particles combine with the negative ions to make larger particles that pass through a series of filters and are removed from the air. The clean air is then exhausted back into the rooms of the home. Basically a housecleaner for the air your breathe! Hoffmann Brother can come install an indoor air scrubber to keep your air quality higher and keep you healthier.
Whole House Humidifiers
Another way to keep your air quality at its best resulting in everyone feeling their best is to add a full house humidifier.
You may be wondering, “Do humidifiers help?” And the answer is yes. There are several impactful benefits of adding a room humidifier or a whole house humidifier to your home. They help …
- Make your home more comfortable
- Solve problems like dry skin and sinus pain (good bye wrinkles)
- Better control dust mites and mold growth
- Maintain the integrity of your home’s furniture and construction
- Improve your home’s ability to efficiently hold heat
Duct Cleaning
Another great way to improve the air quality in your home is to get your ducts cleaned. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends ductwork cleaning every three to five years. We haven’t had this done yet since living in our home, so this is def on our list for fall. Getting your ducts cleaned gets rid of mold, debris and dust that you are otherwise breathing in.
Garbage Disposal
Holidays and cooking/baking go hand in hand. With more cooking means more food watstes! And that trash can outside seems further away as these temperatures drop. Don’t be more inclined to just drop it down the disposal to avoided that dreaded shuffle. In the end it might be more work than its worth. Here is a list of common things that should be tossed instead of thrown down the disposal.
(Don’t even think about those pumpkin guts going doing there!)
Fats, cooking oils, and grease (FOG)
- Eggshells
- Coffee grounds
- Potato peels
- Banana peels
- Pasta
- Rice and beans
- Fruit pits
- Seafood shells
- Paint
- Chemicals
- Bleach water

That’s a wonderful and very informational article! Thank you for creating such helpful content.
To improve air quality in your home, also remember to change air filters once every 2-3 months. Dirty or clogged air filters can also cause extra humidity in a home, which leads to mold growth. Exposure to a large number of mold spores may cause allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and even respiratory diseases in the long run.
Hey! Thank you for sharing the list of things that shouldn’t be thrown down the disposal. FOGs are really one of the most common causes of clogging. If you don’t know what to do with your leftover cooking oils and fats, simply pour it into a melt-proof container. Once the fat/oil has hardened again, you can use a paper towel to wipe the container clean. Then just toss the fat/oil-covered towel into the garbage and voila! No more mess and no clogged drains.
